Kimball Farm Wrap-up

Kimball Farm Wrap-up
There were questioning looks on the faces of the participants when our erstwhile cruise leader past blame to his navigator even before we departed. Mr. Wenzel does not have a stellar record for navigation, having come in dead last at last years Bug Juice Rally. But everyone got behind our lead dog and headed off to Kimball Farms. The ride was scenic and the weather was “top down” perfect. The route was imaginative back roads but it did differ from the instructions. But, in the end we all arrived at the same, rather amazing, location.
Kimball Farms has food, ice cream, shopping, bumper boats, batting cages and lots more. We all had lunch and topped it off with some of the best ice cream we have ever had. And for this group of ice cream lovers that is saying a lot. Some even tackled the Banana Split although not without help. After lunch, rain drops were felt and it sent everyone scrambling back to the Vettes to get the windows and tops up. The few drops then turned into a downpour. We stayed dry and watched brave souls continue to ride the bumper boats in the rain. For some reason, this gave encouragement and bravado to some of our members to man the boats. We took the opportunity to crash into our friends without worry of anything more than a return splash. The storm was gone and we headed home as another event became a memory.

QuarterTanker to Kimballs

Quarter Tanker Run to the Famous
Kimball Ice Cream Stand
On Sunday, June 27, we will be making our first Quarter Tanker Run. A “QT” is a trip that will take about a quarter tank of gas or less. For our inaugural run we are going to Kimball Farm in Westford, MA. This is NOT the Kimball Farms we went to last fall.

Famous since 1939 for their legendary ice cream, Kimball Farm has become a perfect place to visit, have fun and relax. With 36 holes of adventure style mini golf, a bumper boat pond, farm animals and live animal shows, there’s lots of excitement for everyone. Kimball Farm also features a Driving Range, with both mat & grass tees and a par-3, 9-hole Pitch & Putt golf course.

Hungry? Their Luncheon Grill & Seafood Shack serves incredible fried seafood and hot-off-the-grill BBQ. Visit the Country Store for shopping, or to indulge in one of their homemade pastries, soup or gourmet sandwiches. We can top off our visit with their delicious homemade ice cream! You can check out Kimball Farm here.

Meeting times and places
We will meet in Weymouth at the Building 19 parking lot starting at 10:00 am. We will leave promptly at 10:30. Our next stop will be Joe’s American Bar and Grill parking lot in Dedham. We will leave Joe’s at 10:45 sharp. We will be taking some scenic back roads to Westford and should arrive at Kimball Farm about noon. Just in time for lunch.

Toad Hall Wrap-up

Toad Hall
Father’s Day Cruise Wrap-up
Roy and Judy Charron’s daughter Terri Charron put together an amazing day for us all to celebrate Father’s Day. The weather cooperated and the tops went down and the roofs came off. We gathered first at the Rockland Park and Ride for a journey to an eclectic collection of mostly English sports cars. We made a stop at the Totem Pole rest stop to pick up more members and then a ride down to Hyannis Port with warm breezes was the start of a perfect Corvette day.

Toad Hall is an experience that makes you want to stop and tell strangers about it. It began when we were greeted by collector and owner Bill Putman who graciously answered all our questions about the cars. We were able not only to look and photograph, but to touch. Bill gave us permission to open the doors and sit in the cars. His collection is vast, all red and mostly English. There were a few Datsuns, Porches, and a BMW.

Cars are more than just transportation. Cars have the ability to be albums of memories. You catch a glimpse of an old car and the floodgates of memories are opened. Many of us shared a story of some long ago experience that was triggered by seeing a car in the Toad Hall collection.

Following our visit to Toad Hall, we went off to the Hearth and Kettle for lunch. Thank you to all the members, sons, daughters, wives and dads that attended and an especially big thanks to Terri Charron for a wonderful day. View more photos
here. Thanks to Tom Meehan for many of the photos.

Bennington Getaway Wrap-up

Bennington, VT
Weekend Getaway Wrap-up

All who attended the weekend trip to Bennington, VT owe a round of applause to Roy and Judy (aka Joy and Rudy) Charron. They planned and gently oversaw a wonderfully pleasant weekend. Bennington, a small college town, best know as the home of Hemmings Motor News offered a variety of activities for us to explore. Judy and Roy located a nice selection of restaurants to keep us nourished.

A number of new terms were coined this weekend including iKey and iFob. As the weekend progressed, an outsider would conclude that our group were life long friends. They would be surprised to know that we all met only a few short years ago, all because of a love of a very special car. Read more about our weekend
here in Judy’s Journal. And located here are some photos.

Hemmings Getaway

Hemmings Weekend Getaway
We’re off to the Green Mountain State

A weekend getaway has been planned by South Shore Corvette Club members Roy and Judy Charron. The destination is Bennington, VT the home of Hemmings Motor News. We will be leaving Weymouth on Friday, June 4 and returning Sunday, June 6, 2010. If you can’t get away for the entire weekend, you are welcome to come up for a day or just an overnight.

Our tour guides, Roy and Judy, have already made a reconnaissance mission to Bennington and have mapped out the route, the lodging and most important, the restaurants. There is a block of rooms available at the Paradise Inn and the rates are very reasonable. Other lodging is available and many restaurants are near by. There is a variety of places to visit and sights to see. More information is here.

Tax Run Wrap-up

Tax Run Wrap-up
Russ and Judy couldn’t have planned a more perfect event. The weather cooperated and we are hoping that this is just the beginning of a great 2010 SSCC event schedule.

We met at the Rockland Park and Ride and close to 20 Vettes made it out for the 2010 kickoff. Our meandering ride over to Hull took us through Norwell, Hingham, Scituate and Hull. Russ and Judy picked scenic back country roads that make the South Shore such a paradise. Russ stopped many times to keep us all together and we all made it to the Red Parrot in Hull for a Jazz Brunch. Some of our members wore a path in the carpet going back for seconds, thirds and yes, even forth helpings.

Now that you have had the Vette out for a little leg stretching, a great meal and lots of talking over brunch, you can go back to the calculator and the box for receipts.

Tax Run

Tax Run on Sunday, April 11
It’s time to put away the calculator for a couple of hours and fire up the Vette for the kick off cruise of 2010. Russ and Judy Erikson have planned a nice little cruise for us to Hull for brunch. They always make it a scenic tour and the Red Parrot has great food and equally great views. We're meeting at the Rockland Park & Ride lot across the street from Home Depot at 9:30 am. Then we'll go on a meandering ride through the back roads to the Red Parrot in Hull for brunch. This is a rain or shine event.

Long Winter Nap

The long winter nap...
Corvettes today are generally treated somewhat gentler than Vettes in the ’50s. Our Vettes are now in storage getting that trickle of life from the BatteryTender, their paint protected by a car cover that, by the way cost more than that 600 thread count set of sheets on the bed and their propellant augmented with Sta-bil for a quick start in the spring. But the pilots and co-pilots can’t hibernate till spring. The staff here at the SSCC Website has put together a reading list for you to get you away from the glowing box in the corner. These are all car books, not necessarily specific to the Corvette, but just wonderful stories about cars and the people who love them. To see our reading list and recommendations click here.

First Business Meeting of 2010

First Business Meeting of 2010
The turnout was high, the pot luck spread would make a caterer envious and the news from the front of the room was great.

The big news was the change of venue for Cruise Night. After two years at the Monponsett Inn, the officers decided to move Cruise Night to a location that was closer to where the majority of our membership reside. Cruise Night impresario Steve Boyajian gave all the details of our negotiations with the
Abington Ale House. SSCC held its Cruise Night the Abington Ale House for many years and left on good terms. We look forward our return. We will again hold Cruise Night from mid May through the end of September. Let’s all show up on opening day and have a record turnout.

2009 Vette Season Wrap-up

Vette Season Wrap-up
For some 2009 will be remembered as the year without a watering ban. Yes, even Norwell, a town that has had watering bans every year since the first lawn sprinkler was invented let you dump as much water on your lawn as you chose. Read More...
